My Approach
The way I work in the room with a client is trauma informed, as I am trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy as well as I am heavily influenced by the Gestalt approach of psychotherapy. This style of therapy drew me in for a variety of reasons including it operates like a mindfulness based approach by focusing on the here and now. We only have choices in the present moment. By working in the present we are less likely to get caught up on the details, which I like to call “noise” and focus more on the process of what is happening and to look at how that may carry over into other ways of being. By bringing our feelings into the present moment we can allow ourselves to really drop into how we are actually feeling as we talk about the issue we are working through. By being able to identify our feeling states that often times go un-noticed because we are unable to give them a description because we are too caught up on the details. The Gestalt approach can be applied to work with an array of issues from dream work and trauma to eating disorders, and it is versatile enough to be interwoven easily with other forms of therapy such as narrative therapy another style I gravitate towards.
